Luke Ceurvorst, [Oxford ALP seminar] - Understanding and mitigating the ablative Rayleigh-Taylor instability in inertial confinement fusion

Europe/Berlin
Beschreibung

The Oxford Atomic and Laser Physics webinar series welcomes Dr. Luke Ceurvorst (CELIA Laboratory, University of Bordeaux).

The Rayleigh-Taylor instability is ubiquitous throughout the universe, forming at any interface where a light fluid pushes against a heavier fluid. It plays a key role in a wide variety of systems, from supernovae explosions and nebula formation to inertial confinement fusion implosions. Understanding its late-time behavior is crucial to modeling such systems. Yet despite its prevalence, there is still a great deal of uncertainty surrounding this deeply nonlinear phase of development, especially when stabilizing effects such as viscosity, surface tension, or ablation are present. In this seminar, I present a series of experiments designed to understand and control the evolution of this instability in its ablative form. These experiments were performed at the National Ignition Facility and the OMEGA EP laser systems, achieving deeper nonlinearity than any previous experiment and yielding valuable insights which diverge from current models. At the conclusion, I will present the current status of these platforms and the next phase of their evolution to be performed later this year.
