The FLASHForward facility at DESY (Hamburg, Germany) houses a series of innovative plasma-wakefield-acceleration experiments, investigating the efficacy of accelerating electron beams in GV/m environments for future applications. The FLASH FEL facility, to which the FLASHForward beamline is attached, provides a unique combination of low-emittance, GeV-class, highly-stable, and exquisitely-synchronised electron beams from a superconducting MHz-repetition-rate gun and linac. Commissioning of the first phase of this beamline was completed in June 2018 with great experimental progress made since.
The first part of the seminar will concentrate on the overarching experimental programme, recent infrastructure developments, and finally a roadmap for future development and experimentation. The seminar will then expand upon two recent experimental highlights, specifically the development of a novel method for sampling the longitudinal fields of a plasma wake with femtosecond resolution and the use of optimal beam loading to flatten the wakefield, resulting in simultaneous preservation of per-mille-level energy spreads, full charge coupling, and high energy-transfer efficiency.
