In coorperation with IOP we have organized a special Focus on Intelligent Systems in Laser, Plasma and Accelerator Physics in Machine Learning: Science and Technology (IF: 6.3) that closely aligns with the goals of the workshop. Specifically the focus issue is open to submissions within the following scope:
The confluence of artificial intelligence with laser, plasma, and accelerator physics is transforming how we operate large-scale physics facilities and advance our understanding of fundamental physics. As these facilities become more sophisticated, traditional control and optimization approaches are reaching their limits. Building on discussions and presentations from the Workshop on Intelligent Systems in Laser-Plasma Physics held at the University of Oxford in January 2025, this focus issue captures emerging developments in applying machine learning to overcome these challenges.
We aim to showcase how AI is revolutionizing facility operations, experimental design, and computer simulations in these fields. This ranges from automated control systems that maintain laser beam stability to computer models that predict complex plasma behavior. The field is advancing quickly, with new methods emerging that combine physical understanding with data-driven approaches to make experiments more efficient and reliable.
We welcome contributions across the spectrum of machine learning applications in these facilities, including control and automation, experimental design and optimization, smart diagnostics and data analysis, AI-enhanced simulations, predictive maintenance, digital facility models, real-time feedback systems, and physics-informed AI approaches. Of particular interest are works that demonstrate practical applications or theoretical advances in using AI to enhance research and operations in these interconnected fields.
Submissions by workshop participants are highly encouraged. Note that these are not strictly proceedings, but that any submission is subject to normal review and acceptance criteria of MLST. For more information visit this website.
