Generalized Symmetries and Global Models
We consider compactifications of M-theory on purely geometric backgrounds. In many cases singularities of such top-down constructions support QFT degrees of freedom. Symmetries emerge when isolating these degrees of freedom via local limits. Conversely, completing a local model into a global model symmetries are broken or gauged. We explicitly discuss these processes in a number of orbifold geometries and characterize these using SymTrees.
